What to have ready
- The town, and whether the house is on town water or a private well.
- What the water is doing, and where.
- Whether anybody is living in the house right now.
- Roughly when the house was built, and whether it has had additions.
- Whether the water heater is owned or rented, and the name on the rental sticker.
- Photographs of the problem, of the main shut-off, and of the water heater label.
Call, do not email, if
- Water is running and you cannot find the main shut-off.
- Water has reached a light fitting, an outlet or the electrical panel. Stay out of the water and kill the circuit at the panel if you can reach it dry.
- Sewage has come up through a floor drain or a toilet. Close the door and stay out of the room.
- A ceiling is sagging. It is holding water and it will come down.
- You smell gas near the water heater. Leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
