Plumbing in Collingwood, where the tap water comes from the bay
Collingwood tap water starts about 765 metres out in Nottawasaga Bay. What happens to it after the meter depends on how old the house is.
The water in a Collingwood kitchen tap comes in through a submerged intake about 765 metres offshore in Nottawasaga Bay. The Town treats it at the Raymond A. Barker Water Treatment Plant, an ultrafiltration membrane plant built in 1998, and the same plant also supplies New Tecumseth and tops up The Blue Mountains.
The Town is expanding that plant toward 59,000 cubic metres a day, with completion anticipated in 2031, and holds a servicing capacity allocation policy until it is done. That matters to anybody planning a new build or a severance, and it is the first plumbing question in Collingwood that has nothing to do with pipes.
Bay water in the house
Surface water from the bay is cold in winter and carries little of the iron that well water does. Fixtures stay cleaner and water heaters collect less sediment than on a well. The plumbing problems in Collingwood come from the houses, not the water.
Two kinds of Collingwood house
| Where | What usually fails | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| The older streets near the harbour | Clay laterals, cast-iron stacks, old shut-offs | A camera down the main drain |
| Houses from the 1980s and 1990s | Poly-B supply pipe and its fittings | The pipe at the water heater |
| Newer subdivisions | Sump pumps, appliance supply lines | The sump pit before spring |
| Condominiums and townhouses | Supply lines that leak into the unit below | The shut-off under each fixture |
Drains in the older Collingwood core
A blocked main in an older house is often a clay lateral with roots in its joints or a cast-iron line scaled inside. Drain cleaning clears it; a camera says whether it will come back.
Frozen pipes in a Collingwood winter
Collingwood sits in the lake-effect snowbelt and winter crosses freezing many times a season. A supply line on an outside wall or in a crawl space freezes in the cold snap and leaks at the thaw. Frozen pipe repair covers the fix and the cause.
Who owns a leak at the curb
From the water main to the curb stop, the service is the Town’s. From the curb stop into the house, it is yours. A wet patch in the front yard can be either, so call the Town’s water department first if you suspect its side.
Booking work in Collingwood
Collingwood Plumbers needs three things: the town, whether the house is on town water or a private well, and what the water is doing. Those three decide most of the job, from who you should actually call, to whether the fix is a valve, a pump or a pipe.
